Recipe Scale Calculator

Adjust recipe ingredient quantities proportionally when cooking for larger parties, meal prepping, or halving a dish for two.

Recipe Yield & Portion Scaler

Scale recipe ingredients up or down precisely based on your target number of servings.

Yield stated in the recipe.

Portions you want to make.

Quick Scaling Presets (Based on 4 Servings)

Decimals or fractions supported (e.g. 2.5, 3/4, or 1 1/2).

e.g. cups, grams, tbsp

Scaled Ingredient Amount
3.75 cups

Kitchen fraction: approx. 3 3/4 cups

Scale Multiplier1.500×6 ÷ 4
Original Quantity2.5 cupsFor 4 servings
Adjusted Yield6 ServingsTarget portion batch
Fraction Approx.~3 3/4For kitchen measuring spoons
Calculation Steps
  • 1.Calculate scaling multiplier: 6 desired ÷ 4 original = 1.500x factor
  • 2.Multiply ingredient by scale factor: 2.5 cups × 1.500 = 3.75 cups
  • 3.Approximate kitchen fraction: ~3 3/4 cups

Mathematical Formula & Calculation Method

Scale Factor = Desired Servings / Original Servings | Adjusted = Amount × Scale Factor

Formula Components:

  • Scaling Multiplier = Desired Servings ÷ Original Recipe Servings
  • Adjusted Ingredient Amount = Original Quantity × Scaling Multiplier
  • Fraction Conversion = Converts decimal quantities into common kitchen fractions (1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 3/4)

How It Works

1

Enter the original recipe yield (e.g. 4 servings).

2

Enter your desired target portions (e.g. 6 servings or 10 servings).

3

Input the ingredient amount and unit (e.g. 2.5 cups or 150 grams).

4

The calculator computes the scaled amount and displays kitchen fraction equivalents.

Practical Calculation Examples

Scaling 4 Servings up to 6 Servings (1.5× Yield)

A cake recipe calls for 2 cups of sugar for 4 servings; you need 6 servings.

Step 1:Calculate multiplier: 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5× factor.
Step 2:Multiply ingredient: 2 cups × 1.5 = 3 cups of sugar.
Outcome: Use 3 cups of sugar for 6 servings.

Halving a 4-Serving Recipe for 2 People (0.5×)

Scaling down 1.5 teaspoons of vanilla extract.

Step 1:Calculate factor: 2 ÷ 4 = 0.5× factor.
Step 2:Multiply: 1.5 × 0.5 = 0.75 teaspoons (3/4 tsp).
Outcome: Use 3/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Important Assumptions & Estimator Guidance

  • Liquid and dry ingredient quantities scale linearly with serving yield.
  • Baking leaveners (yeast, baking powder, baking soda) may require slight reduction when multiplying by 4× or more.
  • Cooking time and pan sizes do not scale linearly with ingredient volume.

Common Pitfalls & Mistakes to Avoid

Doubling the oven temperature or cooking time when doubling a recipe

Doubling a recipe increases mass, not required thermal baking temperature. Doubling oven heat will burn the exterior.

Correction: Keep oven temperature identical; monitor internal food temperature or bake in two separate pans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pungent spices (cayenne, chili flakes, cloves) and salt should generally be scaled to about 1.5× when doubling a recipe, then adjusted to taste.
