Mathematical Formula & Calculation Method

Total Days = (End Date - Start Date) in Milliseconds / (1000 × 60 × 60 × 24)

Formula Components:

  • Exclusive Calendar Span = End Date - Start Date (standard convention)
  • Inclusive Calendar Span = Total Days + 1 day (counting both start and end days)
  • Weeks Breakdown = floor(Total Days / 7) + (Total Days % 7) remaining days
  • Business Days = Count of Mondays through Fridays within the calendar range

How It Works

1

Select your starting calendar date.

2

Select your target end date.

3

Toggle whether you want standard exclusive counting or inclusive counting (+1 day).

4

The calculator computes calendar days, business workdays, and remaining weeks.

Practical Calculation Examples

Days Between March 1 and April 15 (Standard Exclusive)

Planning project timeline and tax filing deadline.

Step 1:March has 31 days (31 - 1 = 30 days in March).
Step 2:April has 15 days.
Step 3:Total span: 30 + 15 = 45 days (6 weeks and 3 days).
Outcome: 45 total days, consisting of 32 business days and 13 weekend days.

Important Assumptions & Estimator Guidance

  • Standard counting convention is exclusive of the end date (Monday to Tuesday is 1 day).
  • Business days exclude Saturdays and Sundays; public bank holidays are not automatically deducted.
  • Leap years are accounted for in Gregorian calendar calculations.

Common Pitfalls & Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting whether the start or end date was included

Contract durations often count both start and end days inclusive, which is 1 day higher than the calendar difference.

Correction: Use the "Include end date" checkbox when both boundary days must be counted.
